  • How Much Do Drain Repairs Cost in the UK?

Drain repair costs in the UK can start at a few hundred pounds for a localised patch but may reach several thousand pounds when excavation, replacement and surface reinstatement are required. A national market guide from Checkatrade lists a small patch repair at approximately £200 to £450 plus VAT. This is not an RR First Drainage price and it would not normally include CCTV diagnosis, pipe cleaning, additional patches or surface work unless stated in the quotation.

The correct price cannot be established from symptoms alone. Recurring blockages, foul smells and slow drainage can indicate pipe damage but they can also have less serious causes. The normal journey is to assess the symptom, clear the pipe if required and use CCTV equipment to locate any defect before selecting an appropriate repair.

Typical drain repair costs in the UK

The repair method and site conditions usually have a greater effect on price than the visible symptom. The figures below are broad national market guides from the Checkatrade drain repair cost guide. They are not RR First Drainage prices or quotations for a particular property.

  • Localised patch repair: approximately £200 to £450 plus VAT. This normally excludes initial CCTV diagnosis, jetting, root cutting, extra patches and post-repair inspection unless the quotation includes them.

  • CCTV drain survey: approximately £85 to £400 plus VAT depending on the system size and reporting required. This normally excludes drain cleaning, obstruction removal and subsequent repairs unless specified.

  • Drain relining for a 100mm pipe: approximately £70 to £130 per linear metre plus VAT. This normally excludes cleaning, CCTV work, minimum set-up charges, difficult access, branch reconnections and post-repair inspection unless listed.

  • Drain relining for a 150mm pipe: approximately £120 to £170 per linear metre plus VAT with the same common exclusions. Pipe diameter, liner length and access requirements can alter the final quotation.

  • Excavation and pipe replacement: there is no dependable universal per-metre figure. Depth, ground conditions, access, pipe bedding, spoil disposal and reinstatement must be scoped for the individual site. Confirm whether VAT and restoration of paving, concrete, tarmac or landscaping are included.

National guide prices are useful for early budgeting but they cannot replace a site-specific quotation. A contractor should inspect the drainage system and define the work before confirming the cost.

What affects the cost of a drain repair?

Drain repair costs increase when the defect is extensive, difficult to reach or located beneath an expensive surface. Two apparently similar cracked drains can require very different budgets because of their position and structural condition.

Type and severity of damage

A short crack or leaking joint may be suitable for a patch. Multiple fractures along a structurally stable pipe may justify relining. A collapsed, badly deformed or displaced drain is more likely to require excavation and replacement.

Depth and accessibility

A shallow pipe beneath a lawn is normally easier to expose than a deep drain beneath reinforced concrete. Restricted vehicle access can also affect the equipment, labour and time required.

Surface reinstatement

Excavation is not limited to replacing the pipe. The contractor may need to lift and restore block paving, tarmac, concrete, flooring or landscaped areas. The required finish and responsibility for matching materials should be described clearly in the quotation.

Pipe length and diameter

Relining and replacement may be priced partly by length and pipe diameter. Larger pipes require more material while longer runs require more preparation and installation work. Minimum project charges may also apply to short repairs.

Cleaning and preparation

Grease, scale, roots and compacted debris may have to be removed before the pipe can be inspected or repaired. This preparation is particularly important where a clean pipe surface is needed for a patch or liner.

Why CCTV diagnosis should come before repair

A CCTV drain survey shows where the defect is and helps prevent money being spent on the wrong repair. The pipe may first need jetting or mechanical cleaning so the camera can record the internal condition clearly.

A useful inspection should identify the defect location, pipe material, approximate diameter and nature of the damage. It may reveal fractures, open joints, root intrusion, deformation, displaced connections, scale or a complete collapse. The findings should then support the recommended repair method. RR First Drainage provides CCTV drain surveys that can include drain imagery, defect descriptions, problem location and a recommended solution.

Be cautious about accepting a major repair based only on a blocked toilet, overflowing chamber or damp patch. These symptoms do not confirm that the pipe needs lining or excavation. In some cases the underlying issue is a removable obstruction rather than structural damage. In other cases repeated clearing only treats the symptom and a permanent repair is needed.

Which drain repair method is appropriate?

The least disruptive method is not automatically the best method. The repair must match the defect, pipe condition and drainage route.

Patch repair

A patch repair places a short resin-based sleeve over a localised crack, hole or leaking joint. It can be cost-effective when the surrounding pipe remains stable and only one defined section is damaged. Several defects spread along a run may make repeated patches less practical.

Drain relining

Drain relining installs a new lining within an existing pipe. It can repair multiple cracks and defective joints without excavating the full run. Relining can be appropriate beneath driveways, gardens and internal floors where the host pipe has enough structural integrity and retains a suitable route.

Relining should not be forced onto every damaged drain. A liner follows the existing route and will not correct a serious backfall, major displacement or badly sunken section. A fully collapsed pipe may not provide the continuous internal space needed to install a liner. Read more about no-dig drain relining and the conditions in which it may be suitable.

Excavation and replacement

Excavation provides direct access to remove and replace damaged pipework. It may be necessary for a collapse, severe deformation, incorrect gradient or significant structural movement. Excavation may also be appropriate when the drain needs to be rerouted or increased in size.

This method is usually more disruptive because the surface above the pipe must be opened and restored. However, excavation can be the correct long-term decision when a no-dig method would leave the underlying fault unresolved. RR First Drainage offers drain repair services covering cracked, collapsed and damaged pipework.

Extra charges to check before accepting a quote

A complete quotation should separate investigation, preparation, repair and reinstatement costs. A low headline price may exclude work that is essential to complete the job.

  • CCTV inspection, footage and written reporting

  • Drain jetting, descaling or root cutting

  • Emergency or out-of-hours attendance

  • Excavation, spoil removal and waste disposal

  • Access equipment or traffic management

  • Repair or replacement of inspection chambers

  • Reconnection of branch pipes after lining

  • Restoration of concrete, paving, tarmac or landscaping

  • Post-repair CCTV inspection or testing

  • VAT and any stated exclusions

Ask whether the price is fixed for the described work and what could cause it to change. Excavation quotations sometimes contain provisional allowances because the exact depth, ground condition or extent of a collapse may remain uncertain until the area is opened.

Who is responsible for paying?

The following summary applies to England and Wales where responsibility depends on the legal status of the pipe and which properties it serves. A property owner or landlord is normally responsible for a private drain serving only that property. The sewerage company is generally responsible for public sewers and many lateral drains or formerly private shared sewers that transferred into public ownership.

Responsibility cannot always be determined from the property boundary alone. An adopted shared sewer can run within private land while unusual deeds, unadopted systems and private developments may have different arrangements. Check the drainage route and contact the relevant sewerage company before authorising work. The Ofwat guidance on public and private sewers provides a general explanation for England and Wales.

Different arrangements apply elsewhere in the UK. Property owners in Scotland should consult Scottish Water guidance on private drains and public sewers. Readers in Northern Ireland should check responsibility with Northern Ireland Water or the relevant drainage provider.

Leasehold properties, shared developments and commercial premises can have separate maintenance arrangements. Landlords, managing agents and neighbouring owners may need to be consulted before work starts.

Buildings insurance or a separate home emergency policy may contribute to drainage repairs but cover depends on the policy wording and cause of the damage. Accidental damage, tree root intrusion, gradual deterioration and pre-existing defects may be treated differently. Contact the insurer before authorising non-emergency work if you intend to make a claim.

How to obtain an accurate drain repair quote

The most useful quotation links the price to clear CCTV evidence and a defined scope of work. The contractor should explain what is damaged, why the chosen method is suitable and what is included after the repair.

  • Describe the symptoms and how often they occur

  • Provide any previous CCTV footage or drainage reports

  • Ask for the defect location and affected pipe length

  • Request an explanation of patching, relining and excavation where more than one method could work

  • Check whether cleaning and post-repair inspection are included

  • Confirm responsibility for surface reinstatement

  • Ask whether every quoted amount includes VAT

Arrange prompt professional investigation if sewage is entering the property, wastewater is overflowing repeatedly or the ground is visibly sinking near a drain. These conditions can create further property damage and should not be treated as an ordinary slow drain.

For properties in Kent, London and Essex RR First Drainage can start with an assessment of the reported symptoms. The team can provide drain cleaning where required, CCTV evidence, defect location and a method recommendation based on the pipe condition. Where repair work is proposed the quotation can then be scoped around the identified defect, access requirements and relevant reinstatement.

Contact RR First Drainage to arrange an inspection and request a repair quotation based on the diagnosed defect.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is drain relining always cheaper than excavation?

Not always. Relining often avoids surface removal and reinstatement but the pipe must be suitable. Excavation may provide better value where the drain is collapsed, badly displaced, incorrectly graded or only a short accessible section needs replacing.

Can a drain repair price be given without a CCTV survey?

A contractor may provide a broad estimate but a reliable repair quote usually requires evidence of the defect and its location. The pipe may need cleaning before CCTV footage can show its condition accurately.

Does a drain repair include fixing the driveway or patio?

Only if reinstatement is stated in the quotation. Check which surface finish and materials are included as well as whether disposal, labour and VAT have been allowed for.

Should I stop using the drains while waiting for a repair?

It depends on the defect. If sewage is backing up, a pipe has collapsed or wastewater is escaping, reduce water use and seek urgent professional advice. A drainage contractor can confirm whether limited use is appropriate after inspection.
